Fenocchio calls deputy prosecutor ‘natural leader’

Last spring two Placer County deputy district attorneys approached one of their own and asked him one important question.

The answer? An emphatic, “yes.”

That was the story county deputy district attorney Doug Van Breemen recounted for a packed-in crowd of community leaders and elected officials at a Roseville restaurant Thursday morning. All were in support of senior deputy district attorney Ronald “Scott” Owens, who answered yes to the question of whether or not he would want to be Placer County’s next district attorney.

About 40 community leaders and elected officials gathered at Utopia Grill in Roseville Thursday morning to offer their support for Placer County Senior Deputy District Attorney Ronald “Scott” Owens. Owens is running for county District Attorney in 2010. Current District Attorney Brad Fenocchio announced his support alongside Placer County Sheriff Ed Bonner. Fellow Deputy District Attorney Doug Van Breemen spoke on behalf of the Placer County Deputy District Attorney’s Association. He said all 30-plus attorneys voted unanimously in May 2007 to support Owens’ campaign.

Brad Fenocchio, Placer County’s district attorney for the past 14 years, announced today he is retiring and will not seek re-election when his term ends in 2010.

Fenocchio, 60, said he will endorse the office’s acting assistant district attorney, Scott Owens, as his successor.

The district attorney made the announcement at a breakfast meeting at a Roseville restaurant to introduce Owens to political, law enforcement and community leaders.

Owens is an 18-year veteran prosecutor in the Placer office and also doubles as the public information officer. He worked for the Placer County Probation Office for seven years before joining the District Attorney’s Office.

He was the office’s “prosecutor of the year” in 1998.

Doug Van Breemen, vice president of the Placer County Deputy District Attorneys Association, said members unanimously supported Owens when the group met a year ago to discuss a possible successor to Fenocchio.

“Scott has a deep, deep commitment to public safety,” Van Breemen told the breakfast audience.

“We’re very excited,” Owens said Wednesday.

Officials from other Placer County law enforcement organizations are expected to announce their support for Owens at the breakfast Thursday.
